The idea of winter: Aching, shaking, crazy cold (Nov 24th 2012)

1、Trawling through the 18th century to the present day, he explores man’s changing relationship to cold in the environment, how “winter started as this thing we had to get through; it has ended as this time to hold on to.”
难点:how “winter started as this thing we had to get through; it has ended as this time to hold on to.”的理解与翻译
分析:这里how之前的逗号改为长破折号更为合适,或者在how前面加上i.e.。这句话中this thing和this time都指代winter,get through有“度过、承受”的意思,hold on to表示“适应”

难点:I often go to sleep at night running through great goals I have seen.的理解
分析:running through great goals I have seen是现在分词短语,在时态上表示与go to sleep的同时进行,run through有repeat、look at something quickly的意思,这里可以译为“一遍遍地回想”,这句话的意思是“我看到精彩的冰球比赛以后,常会在一遍遍的回想中进入梦乡”

3、The second is Mr Gopnik’s apt turn of phrase.
难点: turn of phrase的理解

4、But his ability to talk about town planning, ice hockey and poetry with the same enthusiasm brings to his subjects, and to winter, a much-needed warmth.
难点:句子结构,subjects的理解
分析:bring的直接宾语是a much-needed warmth,间接宾语是to his subjects, and to winter。subject指代书中内容(话题)
