”know a thing or two”其实是指”to have practical and useful information gained from experience”,不是“略知一二”,而是“非常熟悉,了如指掌”。

35. His speech was given a warm reception by the crowd.
误译:他的讲话受到了群众的热烈欢迎。
应译为:他的讲话受到群众的热烈反对。
“be given a warm reception”是句反语,含义为”be attacked violently in words”。如将其直译,这句话的意思就弄反了。另一个习语”give somebody a warm time”,用法与此相同。意为”make somebody embarrassed”。

36.When do you hope to start a family?
误译:你希望什么时候成家呢?
应译为:你希望什么时候生第一个孩子呢?
“start a family”不是“成家“,而是”give birth to the first child”。

37.It is a good athlete that never loses points.
误译:从不丢分的运动员才是优秀的运动员。
应译为:再好的运动员也会丢分。
这里,“It is a adj.+n. that+否定句“是个习语中常出现的句型,应理解为”even if …+adj.,肯定句,即”再……的,也会……”。而与此结构相似的强调句型中,一般没有形容词。

38.I can’t see you quickly enough.
误译:我不可很快见到你。
应译为:我巴不得尽快与你见面。
“can‘t…+adj./adv.+enough”,意思是“越……越好。

39.She is old but still able.
她虽老但仍然很能干。
Able adj. 能,会;有才能的。再如He is an able man. 他是一个能人。

40.The press give the new film the thumbs down.
报纸对这部新电影评价很低。观看角斗士在竞技场生死拼杀是古罗马的娱乐项目之一。比武结束后,由观众裁判如何处置被击败的角斗士。如果观众的大拇指向上(thumbs up)就释放失败者;如果观众拇指向下(thumbs down)就处死失败者。如今,人们用thumbs up表示赞成,用thumbs down表示反对。
例句:The government's plan has got the thumbs up from the public.
政府的计划得到了公众的赞许。

41.This is a dangerous and violent city. In some parts of it, the only law
is the law of the jungle.
误译:这是一个危险的充满暴力的城市。在有些地方,唯一的原则就是森林法则。
应译为:这是一个危险的充满暴力的城市。在有些地方,唯一的原则就是弱肉强食。
这里“the law of the jungle”引申为”principle for surviving in a violent
and dangerous situation, no rules at all”,如译为“森林法则“,则含义不
明。”弱肉强食“才是准确、明了地传达了原文所要表达的意义。

42.  To my joy, my son knows a thing or two about Italian.
误译:使我高兴的是,我儿子对意大利语也略知一二。
应译为:使我高兴的是,我儿子对意大利语还很精通哩。
”know a thing or two”其实是指”to have practical and useful information gained from experience”,不是“略知一二”,而是“非常熟悉,了如指掌”。

43.They promised to pay me yesterday, but they are dragging their feet.
◆drag one's feet
字面词义:拖住脚。
真正含义:故意拖延或推迟做某事。
◆句子翻译
他们答应昨天付我钱,却一直拖延不给。

例句
1、She could not drag her feet another step.
她无法再拖动她的脚一步。
2、Otherwise, some departments might drag their feet in participating.
否则的话,有些部门可能不会积极参与。
3、One horsepower is the amount of energy it takes to drag a horse 500 feet in one second.
一马力是一秒内把一匹马拽500英尺的能量。
4、We suspect the Government of dragging their feet.
我们怀疑政府在拖延。
5、He dragged his tired feet slowly along.
他拖着疲倦的步子慢慢地走着

44.Jack is a black sheep of the class.
◆ black sheep
字面词义:黑羊。
真正含义:害群之马;集体中的败类。

例句
1、Black sheep dwell in every fold.
每个团体都有害群之马。
2、There are black sheep in every flock.
害群之马到处有。
3、Perhaps every profession has got its black sheep.
也许每个行业都有害群之马。
4、There is a black sheep in every flock.
[谚]人多必有败类。
5、He is regarded as the black sheep of the family.
他被认为是个败家子。

45.They held a party last night and everything was at sixes and sevens when the guests left.
昨晚他们开了一个家庭聚会。当客人散尽之后,一切物品都挪了位置。

at sixes and sevens 的英文释义为:not in order; in confusion; in a mess, 和汉语中的“七零八落”、“乱七八糟”意同。

另外,在具体的上下文中,该片语的实际含意也有所变化。例如:
After the captain of the team broke his leg, the other players were at sixes and sevens. 球队队长摔断了腿,其他队员陷入了一片混乱。
The members couldn't come to an agreement. They were at sixes and sevens.
委员们不能达成一致意见。他们各持己见。

46.His health condition is bound to affect his work.
他的病况一定会影响他的工作。
be bound to指一定,必定,免不了。
又如:His laziness is bound to result in his failure.
他的懒惰注定导致他的失败。

47.My friend Jack likes to watch horror movies. But to me they seem to be all the same. There is always somebody coming to rescue the good guys in the nick of time.
In the nick of time  最后一刻
我的朋友杰克喜欢看恐怖电影。可是,在我看来,它们似乎都是千篇一律。每到最后一刻,总是有人会来解救好人的。

48.Back in school we made fun of Jones because we thought he spent too much time studying instead of having fun. Now the shoe is on the other foot -- he's made lots of money and the rest of us are just barely making enough to feed our families."
The shoe is on the other foot的意思是:形势已经完全不同了。
以前在学校里念书的时候,我们老是笑话琼斯,认为他这个人老是念书,不会玩。可是,现在情况就完全不同了。他赚了不少钱,而我们这些人的收入只够维持家计而已。

49.knock one's socks off:使…震惊   
I didn't think Lucy was a good public speaker, but her speech yesterday really knocked my socks off.我认为露西不善于在公共场合发言,但昨天她的发言让我大吃一惊。
The latest government taxes knocked everyone's socks off.最近的政府税收令人惊讶。

50.Severe snowstorms wreaked havoc on traffic.严重的暴风雪使交通瘫痪。
《纽约时报》描述中国雪灾的一句话。动词wreak,本意是“发泄(怒火)”,这里使用的是引申的意思“带来,引起(灾难)”。名词havoc,就相当于中文里“浩劫”,一般用来指大的灾难。由于wreak havoc这个动宾搭配经常在形容天灾人祸的文章中出现,所以可以一起记忆。

51.Did you expect Gilian would have no nerves?
【关键词】have no nerves
【误译】你想到吉莉恩会这样无胆量吗?
【原意】你想到吉莉恩会这样泰然自若吗?
【说明】have no nerves是习语,意为“泰然自若”,“保持冷静”,“满不在乎”,“无动于衷”等。

52.He has it that love is blind.
【关键词】have it
【误译】他有盲目的爱情。
【原意】他说,情人眼里出西施。
【说明】have it是习语(动词短语),意为“说”,“言明”,“主张”。

53.Mike had ants in his pants and was in no mood for playing.
【关键词】have ants in one's pants
【误译】麦克裤子里有蚂蚁,没有心思玩。
【原意】麦克坐立不安,没有心思玩。
【说明】have ants in one's pants是口语,意为“坐立不安”,“跃跃欲试”,“急于行动”,“神不守舍”。

54. Miles had an axe to grind.
【关键词】have an axe to grind
【误译】迈尔斯有一个斧头要磨。
【原意】迈尔斯另有企图。
【说明】have an axe to grind是口语,意为“另有企图”。

55.Bertha is making money hand over fist.
【关键词】hand over fist
【误译】伯莎正把一只手放在拳头上面数钱。
【原意】伯莎正在迅速发财。
【说明】hand over fist或hand over hand是习语(副词短语),意为“迅速而大量地”。

56.Gilian is nursing Gavin hand and foot in the sickroom.
【关键词】hand and foot
【误译】吉莉恩正在病房护理加文的手脚。
【原意】吉莉恩正在病房全力护理加文。
【说明】本例的hand and foot构成一个副词短语,意为“勤勉而周到地”,“全力地”。

57.David has a head like a sieve.
【关键词】have a head like a sieve
【误译】戴维的头部像筛网(千疮百孔)。
【原意】戴维很健忘。
【说明】have a head like a sieve是习语(动词短语),意为“健忘”,“记不住东西”。

58.Meg had a thin time.
【关键词】have a thin time
【误译】梅格的时间很少。
【原意】梅格遇到了不愉快的事情。
【说明】have a thin time是口语(动词短语),意为“碰到烦恼的事情”,“感到不愉快”。

59.William has a monkey on his back and can't quit.
【关键词】have a monkey on one's back
【误译】威廉的背上有一只猴子而又没法把它赶跑。
【原意】威廉染上了毒瘾而又无法戒掉。
【说明】have a monkey on one's back是俚语(动词短语),意为“染上毒瘾”。

60.Of course, she's equal to the task.
当然,她能胜任这工作。
be equal to the task:能胜任那工作。  
例:His word is good. He's equal to the task. 他说到做到,他能胜任这工作。
She's a professional designer. She is equal to the task. 她是专业设计师,能胜任这项工作。

61.I'm busy trying to make ends meet.
我正忙于尽力使收支平衡。
make ends meet:使收支平衡    例:I'm trying to make ends meet. So I do typing work as a part time job. 为了是收支平衡,我兼职做一份打字的工作。

62.I'm at the end of my rope.
我受够了(我已忍无可忍)。
at the end of one's rope:忍无可忍    例:If you continue to treat me like this, I'll leave you. I'm at the end of my rope.再对我这样,我就离开你,我已忍无可忍。After six months on strike, the workers were at the end of their rope.工人们经过6个月的罢工后已经精疲力竭了.

65.尽可能地把门开大

68.Turn left at the next corner and then follow your nose —— you can't miss it.
到前面的路口向左转,然后一直走就到了,你不会看不到的。"follow your nose"的意思就是"一直走"。
Follow your nose还可以解释为利用嗅觉找到什么东西。例如:
"You say you're looking for the French Bakery? Just walk two blocks north, turn left, and you can smell that wonderful smell of fresh bread baking: just follow your nose and it will bring you right to the front door."
"你是说你在找那个法国面包店吗?往北走过两条街,然后向左转,你就会闻到那烤面包的香味。随着香味走就会把你带到那面包店的门口了。"
"Follow your nose"在这句句子里着重的是嗅觉,而不是方向。

69.My brother Bob borrowed the money to open his restaurant five years ago when the interest rate was so high, so he's been paying through the nose ever since.
我哥哥在五年前借钱开他那个饭馆的时候正好利率非常高。所以,他从那时起就一直在大笔大笔地还债。
Pay through the nose。 Pay就是付钱的意思。按字面上来解释,pay through the nose就是通过鼻子来付钱,这听起来似乎很痛苦。而实际上,pay through the nose的确切意思是付出比真正的价值高得多的钱,或者说付出的钱实在太多而感到心痛。To pay through the nose是付出很高价钱的意思。
Life is funny. When the famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh was alive, nobody wanted to buy his pictures. But now rich people will pay through the nose for one, sometimes more than five million dollars.
人生实在是很有趣的。当那位有名的荷兰画家凡高还活着的时候,没有人要买他的画。可是,现在那些有钱人却愿意出高价买他的画,有时候一张画就要五百多万美元。

70.Todd always has a sweet tooth.
【关键词】have a sweet tooth
【误译】托德总爱说甜言蜜语。
【原意】托德总是爱吃甜东西。
【说明】have a sweet tooth是口语(动词短语),意为“爱吃甜的东西”,“喜欢甜食”。

71.He is an easy-going person, but goes with the flow.
他很随和,但是爱随大流。
flow的意思是“水流”,go with the flow的意思即是“跟随主流,随从大家的意见”,或者,用个成语来解释,随波逐流。

72.There is a skeleton in the cupboard. 家丑不可外扬。
句子的原意是,壁橱中有架骷髅
据说,当年这个习语产生的时候,指的是那些有钱人家谋杀了一个人,把骸骨暗藏在壁橱中,不让外人知道。从此 skeleton in the closet 就成了那家人的秘密。后来这个短语用来指不可或不愿外扬的家丑,简称作family skeleton。现在,这个句子还有个转义:家家有本难念的经。
例如:Many old families have a number of skeletons in their closets which they are loath to discuss.
许多古老的家族中有很多秘密,他们不愿谈及这些话题

73.He is wearing two hats. 他身兼两职。
hat,本意是“帽子”。“他戴了两顶帽子”,类似汉语中“他顶了两个头衔”,异曲同工。

74.For the time being, you will have to share this room with another person.
for the time being暂时
你暂时得和另外一个人合住这个房间。

75. At the bark of the dog, some birds stayed astonished, others disappeared into the blue.
into the blue (消失得)无影无踪
听到狗的叫声,有的鸟儿被惊呆了,其它的飞得无影无踪了。

76.Don't throw those old textbooks away; they may come in handy some day.
come in handy有用得着的时候
别把那些旧书扔掉,也许哪天能用得着。

77.Don't jump to conclusions.
不要急于下结论。

A: This book isn't worth reading.
B: Don't jump to conclusions. You should at least skim through it.
A: Maybe you are right.
                                      
A:这本书不值一读。
B:不要急于下结论。你至少应该浏览一下。
A:也许你说得对。

has/have other fish to fry有别的事要做

我肯定Rose不会去野餐的,她有别的事要做。
