      A significant portion of Chinese emissions of air pollutants in recent years has resulted from the manufacture of goods intended for export, new research by a team of Chinese and international scholars found, reflecting the increasingly global nature of China’s environmental crisis.
     The research, led by Jintai Lin of China’s Peking University, found that in the year 2006, more than one-third of sulfur dioxide and around a quarter of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide emitted by China were tied to the manufacture of goods for export.
In addition, the researchers say, as the United States outsourced more of its pollution-causing industries to China over the years, the western United States has become prone to what is known as “trans-boundary air pollution” originating in China.
     The findings are likely to stoke discussions among governments and academics about the responsibilities of heavy-consuming nations like the U.S. to help producing countries like China cut air pollution.
Mr. Lin said in an interview the research is not intended to assign blame to other countries for China’s air-pollution woes, but could help to spur more cooperation among the nations involved.
