Necessity is the mother of invention, goesthe saying. But not so. A considerable body of research over many years hasshown that pressure is an almost sure-fire way to shut down creativity. As amore accurate saying puts it: “Keep your ear to the ground, your nose to thegrindstone, and your shoulder to the wheel. Now try to work in that position.” There’s a huge difference between beingmotivated to do something and being driven to do it. It’s hardly news thatpeople respond better to incentivesthan to threats. Therefore, all but the most ignorant HR departments trainmanagers in the art of motivation. So why do many managers treat themselvesworse than they would their staff? When I look at colleagues or clients orfriends, I see more driven people than motivated ones. Many of us have onlyourselves to blame for the hunched-over (驼背的) posture. “You’ve got to understand, I’m under a lot of pressure,”one told me recently; thinking about it later, I realized that her business is doing well and she has created herown anxiety. Of course, that’s a lot easier to observe in someone else than in yourself, whichis one reason people see psychologists. But here are some signs: Are you pursuing something, or are youbeing pursued? At the most basic level, people are motivated by rewards anddriven by fears. A lot of research suggests that optimists are more successfulthan pessimists. Lawyers are the great exception, according to Martin Seligmanof the University of Pennsylvania, partlybecause they’re selected, trained, and paid to look for what might go wrong. Who has defined success for you? Sure, you may have budgets and targets andstretch goals, but if those are your only milestones, you’ve given up thechance to find intrinsic motivations – like, for example, recognizing your owngrowing expertise. Someone who is motivated feels satisfaction at the endof a project; someone who is driven feels relief. One has champagne; the otherneeds a drink. Are you trying to stand out or to fit in?There’s always an element of pridein motivation… Motivated people like to show off their accomplishments, and revel in the uniqueness of what theyhave done. Someone driven, by contrast, is complying,even when he is a so-called high achiever. Are you getting somewhere? Motivation maybe intrinsic, but it thrives on feedback loops. New research from Harvard Business School’sTheresa Amabile documents the unexpected power of progress as a motivator: It’sthe number-one reason people report having had a good day at work, rankingahead of recognition, incentives, clear goals, or support. You want to knowthat you’re getting somewhere. When we’re progressing, we’re motivated; whennot, we start driving ourselves. Most managers try to be conscientious about motivating theirpeople rather than driving them. 5. comply:v. (with) to do what you have to door are asked to do 遵照,照做,应允;顺从,服从。如:She has complied with the requirements.
其名词形式为compliance“遵从,服从,依从”,与之容易混淆的词是compliment“n./v. 恭维,赞美,表扬;致意,问候(一般用复数形式)”。
其形容词形式为compliant“(with)遵从的,服从的,依从的,顺从的,屈从的;与……相符合的,一致的”,与之容易混淆的词是complimentary“表示敬意的,赞美的,恭维的”。
6. conscientious:adj. 认真的,自觉的;尽职的,尽责的。这个词强调“恪尽职守”的意思。
可与之一并记忆的词有conscience“n. 良心,良知”,conscious“adj. (of)意识到的,自觉的;神志清醒的”。
长难句解析: 1.
