第一个it是形式主语，真正的主语是to…of forty,谓语是imagine，宾语是a time，when引导时间状语从句修饰time.   后面一个从整体上看so…that结构，that从句中存在个短语define…as…，applied分词短语做定语修饰a term of contempt, 分词短语结构为applied by sb to do，而且两个writers后都有个who引导的定语从句修饰，第一个writer指不受读者欢迎的作家，第二个writer指前句有思想和天赋写作的作家
