Admittedly, Nor have I ever recited any passages (or say, texts etc) given on the Graduate Entrance Exam (English Test) papers. True, it proves undoubted that reciting could (dramatically) improve an English learner's language skills -- I was forced to recite numbers of ancient words in Chinese until having sat the University Entrance Exam, leading to a satisfying result.
BUT...just because it was once helpful doesn't mean it should be the sole way. In my own view, the proceeding to get a moderate comprehension skill is merely READING -- not except reciting itself involved. Reciting is supposed to enhance the memory of certain passages, and grasp logic and metaphor in consequence. Through this lens, reciting is to read, or to be infused.
As for me, focusing on such a small catalogue -- dozens of adapted articles, every and every and every day -- seems too boring. It would drive me mad. Why not read more reports, fresh reports? English learners in China are always murmuring they lack atmosphere. Nonsense! There is so much English reading material for free online. Just read it, understand it, absorb it.
Still, say no to so-called word lists -- they are obituaries indeed. A word in a sentence is meaningful; a sentence in a content is meaningful; and a content in a mind is meaningful. Read and read and read, every and every and every day, read different minds.
If we want get a high score one time, we are to have gotten higher scores. Taking the University Entrance Exam (English Test) for example, supposing the officially recommended word list contains 3000 words and collocations, 130+ must have recognised 4000 or above (the surplus apparently cannot be remembered on the list, but are approached in daily tests). I've once searched some exercises online, some clozes and passages in our everyday practice tests originated from the Graduate Entrance Exam (English Test), some were from CET-4,6 -- I was in senior grade 2 and 3 then.
You are a teacher now. Have you realized you get 92, but your students only get 70+ or 80+? Why? Since you are elder, particularly you've read more and more than your students , I suppose. You should tell your students how to get 90+, which you have reached, rather than get 70+ or 80+. |
