一篇高质量的Personal Essay怎么写？

　　meeloun每次帮助学生或者客户edit升大学的personal essay或奖学金申请书，都一定要和大家分享一下，如何可以开始edit？因为meeloun（essay.lxws.net）希望要了解兴趣同passion、有什么理由非要申请这个学位不可呢？这样才有可能写出超神的申请信。为什么要超神？Admission officer每天都要读几十封信，如果写的一般，怎么会有interview的机会呢？那到底该怎么写呢？请往下看：

　　1.Throw away the templates.

　　网上可以找到很多申请信的样板，但是，Your essay should be unique,and uniquely you.文字是否出于真心，读者都看得出。

　　2.Show,don't just tell.

　　是人都能读懂的廉价形容词，可以省省了。什么creative thinker、great attention to detail、logically-minded这些好像对住admission requirements照抄的词，谁不懂写？写了，哪会有用？不是说这些qualities都没有用，只是你要找方法说服你的reader，你的确拥有这些qualities。要stories and concrete examples,colourful examples that can help your reader depict what kind of person you are。人人都懂得吹的废话，请尽量减少。

　　3.Don't be afraid to market yourself.

　　很多人其实并不了解自己。举个例，有个学生想申请奖学金到外国修读mass communication的硕士课程。他在某大电台任职，负责节目制作，多年制作过不少很受欢迎而独一无二的节目。写申请信时一定要多花力气介绍电台（国内的电视，外国人未必知道）及谈谈他最流行的节目，例如获得的奖项、节目受欢迎程度，以及其他特别之处。这跟所报科目有关，也能表现能力，应该多讲多sell。

　　4.Show your unique insight into the field.

　　写你对学科或行业的独特见解，或特别能力。见解很重要，因为能表现你对学科的认识、兴趣、insight和passion。举个例，如果Dueduedue要报道Master's in Linguistics或Teaching English as a Second Language，不能只写I'm very passionate about English teaching。我会讲我有什么在英文教学界「人无我有」的经验，或对科目有什么insight。例如我会先讲自己工作独特之处：

　　I consider myself a specialist in the English teaching industry—I help business executives and professionals improve their spoken English.I work with them on all aspects of their oral English,from pronunciation to speech delivery.Instead of limiting myself to the teaching of articulation,I focus a lot on improving the prosodic features of my clients'English speech,namely,speech rhythm and intonation—areas that many English teachers find difficult,if not impossible,to teach.

　　然后再elaborate：为什么rhythm and intonation对大家来说特别难学，自己有什么特别的教法等等，显出对自己科目的见解。当然，最后还要扣题，讲清楚why studying linguistics at the postgraduate level will help me achieve my goals(doing further research into pronunciation teaching and devising new ways of teaching).
